At present public health authorities are saying it is OK to attend public events and gatherings if you DON’T have measles. So all Māori Language Week events are going ahead. You can get advice on this disease, how to avoid it and how to manage it in Auckland here. All centres here.

Ngā iwi mana whenua o Tāmaki Makaurau invite you to Hīkoia te Kōrero – Walk the Talk 2019.

Show your pride for te reo Māori (the Māori language) and hīkoi (walk) on the iconic Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill for Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) on Thursday 12 September.

Immerse yourself in the reo and enjoy a day of celebration on this precious tupuna maunga (ancestral mountain). Join the walk up to, and around the tihi (summit) of Maungakiekie, then come back down to stalls, sausage sizzle and live music to keep you and the whānau entertained.

As tūpuna maunga hold a paramount place in historical, ancestral and cultural identity for Māori, it will be a hugely historic moment to see te reo Māori being celebrated at this place of signficance.

Be part of history in the making!

More information on entertainment and stalls to come, so make sure you tune back in for full details.

The event is proudly supported by Te Kaunihera o Tāmaki Makaurau, the Tūpuna Maunga Authority and the Tūpuna Taonga Trust.

Don’t forget: Your pounamu wai (water bottle), hū hīkoi (walking shoes) and tina (lunch) – there will be limited food stalls.

Important: To preserve this precious maunga, please keep on the road to the tihi at all times, no walking on the grass. No private drones. Photographers and TV crew will be present.

Getting to Maungakiekie: Visit Auckland Transport to plan your journey, as there will be no parking and roads will be closed in and around Maungakiekie. Schools should email for travel assistance.
